A Place Further Than The Universe (Sora yori mo Tooi Basho) is this season’s addicting coming-of-age story about four teenage girls joining an expedition to Antarctica.
It’s a rare original series that is being produced by Madhouse – 2015’s Death Parade was their last original. The team is a mish-mash of talent, but it’s being led by No Game No Life director Atsuko Ishizuka! If you love the style of YoriMori, you might want to check out some of these other anime.
Director – Atsuko Ishizuka
Ishizuka is a rising star and is one of Madhouse’s more reliable directors. Most fans know Ishizuka for directing No Game No Life and No Game No Life: Zero, but she cut her teeth as a co-director working on Supernatural the Animation.
Since then, Ishizuka has won a following directing the teenage dramas Hanayamata and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. It looks like A Place Further Than The Universe may be added to Ishizuka’s stable of fantastic dramas.
Series Composition – Jukki Hanada
Hanada is a Kyoto Animation alumnus who seems to enjoy working with Madhouse in-between KyoAni projects.
His taste of humor mixed with drama can be found in Nichijou, Sound! Euphonium, and Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions. Hanada also knows when to tone down the jokes as seen in the scripts for Princess Jellyfish and Steins;Gate.
Character Design – Takahiro Yoshimatsu
Do you love clean lines, expressive eyes, and really shiny hair? Yoshimatsu has been designing characters since the ’90s, with Trigun and the series of Slayers movies being his claim to fame. Newer fans will be familiar with his work on Hunter x Hunter and Overlord, both of which he served as chief animation director.
Music Composition – Yoshiaki Fujisawa
A Place Further Than The Universe has a great and emotional musical score, which is thanks to Fujisawa’s ear!
Fujisawa has collaborated with director Ishizuka on No Game No Life: Zero and Prince of Stride: Alternative. However, he rose to fame composing the soundtracks for The Eccentric Family and Love Live! School Idol Project.
Art Director – Saho Yamane
Art directors are responsible for the background art, which is some A Place Further Than The Universe has been praised for.
Yamane is a relative newbie but has won praise for their work on From the New World and Space Brothers. They’ve also collaborated with director Ishizuka on Hanayamata and Prince of Stride: Alternative.
